Anyone swapped the Storm 'box for an SP one?

Post by freeridenick »

I've been looking at closer ratios and there's obvously nothing left that's specific to the Storm. Having had a chat with Nova they've made me think the SP box will fit. Not as close as their Nova SP 'box but better than the Storm.

Some part numbers are exactly the same, the output shaft and input shaft second gear for example, others are the same initial numbers with different mid section letters. It even looks possible to swap just the input shaft/1st gear and 4th gear on to the Storm box and get ratios very close to the SP.

true (OCMD is my middle name, lol), but I mod with a goal in mind, in response to a need. What does one hope to accomplish here?

The (Storm) HRC close-ratio box does rear its head from time to time (on jauce.com, for example). That being said, the VTR's broad spread of power (unless you develop it to an ultra-peaky Stage 4 tune, lol), IMO, seems capable of pulling the gaps between gears. Anyhow, who am I to judge someone else's "needs". Good luck on your quest...

This was only ever about the track, for the road I agree the std gearing is fine.

Anyway on closer inspection of the part numbers I think this could be a straight swap but on comparison of ratios it's not worth it. I might just have found something better to spend my money on :shh: .

The Storm and SP are pretty much exactly the same bar the SP's taller 1st gear. That would make setting up a quicksifter slightly easier but I've come round to there being better mods.

No. There's on one ebay that might go for a cheeky offer but I'm going to try mik_str's Krankvent option first.

Yep fitted the box, bloody love it !

I had to make a couple of mods.....

1) The clutch end of the mainshaft has to be ground down 2mm (the RC51 box shaft is 3mm longer on that end).

2) A spacer washer is needed under the original clutch hub nut & washer.

3) I ground down most of the original clutch hub locknut bendable flange, left just ehoughto bend into the detent groove.

I posted more details somewhere on here (or the Superhawk forum, can't remember) somewhere, l'll see if l can dig up the info.

I used the Firestorm shift forks too.

I've been working on carburation since, that has consumed my thinking so much everything else is gone from my brain ;-)
