That rear suspension

Post by BrianC »

I know there has been lots of posts on this but I'd like to share my pictures and experiences.

I decided it had to be looked at having read the horror stories on here but I was pretty confident having insisted on a 12 month MOT when I bought my storm

BUT the vague advisory should have sounded alarm bells !!!!! And is another reason you MUST check these!!!

"Rear suspension bearing has slight free play"

So all the usual stuff:

put bike on bike lift, then use tiedown straps to lift back up and take weight off suspension

Image

off with the wheel (chain and sprockets had it !!!)
off with silencers
off with headers -was replacing them anyway

Then start to dismantle and shock horror!!!! First - the good news was that the bolt that fastens the cushion arm to the swing arm cam undone pretty easy, unlike some others I see on here.

The bad news was that the two needle bearings had corroded and completely disintegrated - see below. So much so that the collar had almost worn right through the bearing outer cover into the casting!!

In addition the needle bearing in the smaller end of the dogbone was also seized.

So all bearings, seals and collars were ordered. In the meantime I bought a used cushion arm from ebay - came and it had been completely refurbished and powdercoated.

So fitted grease nipple to arm and large dogbone end - then new bearings, seals and small collar in

Image

Also refurbishing original arm as below:

Its worth saying that getting the remains of the needle bearings out of the original arm took a lot of heat and patience, but I got there.

Going to rebuild the rear suspension after I do the manual cct s tomorrow!!!!

And on we go

Good job mate, couple of squirts every now and again and she'll be happy !

If you ever need to buy grease make sure it's not food grade, it's sh1t, we have to use it at work now and it just doesn't last, I'm sure it's just refined margerine.

Nice job  .Grease nipples are all well and good. However, don't become lazy with servicing. Remember the needle bearing that suffers the most is the solitary one at the end of the dog bone as it is the closest to the exhaust and gets the most heat. I did mine using the Abba stand with the rear tyre still in situe. Job took all of 2hrs tops.

Just pulled mine apart to get the shock out for a refurb, new gas and oil, and even tough I rebuilt mine a couple of years back, greased with good quality grease, the lower shock eye bolt still seized in.
I pressed out out using a socket and a vice, but it was tight enough to bend the vice handle like a banana.
Mind you I had a length of scaffold pipe on it......

Anyway, shock's already boxed and posted, so I will wire brush and repaint the parts during the week.

Looks like it's a job best done every year, particularly if used in winter.
It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.

I don't work for them but use Kluber grease, its expensive but bloody brilliant stuff. You need to put the grease gun on a radiator to get it out in the first instance, its white and looks like lard but amazing stuff.

while on this subject in the triangle shaped linkage is the distance from to the captive bearings to the two holes for the other link and shock lower mount identical?ive noticed when 2up the spring on my nitron shock has just kissed the swing arm enough to leave paint on the alloy!
