Oil Consumption

Post by darkember »

What would be classed as a normal rate of oil consumption for these bikes??

I have covered approximately 1000 miles and used about 200 - 250 ml

That's cool  Watty you must have a very rare one not using any. Some oil usage is good for lubing the rings.

If I spent them 800 miles above 8k I'm sure I would of used more but as the roads were twisty all the way I kept it in the mid range and only took it up high once or twice

Funny that, I had a TRX850 and they were prone to using oil, mine used none.

My Storm does not appear to use any either.

The 848 does not use any and nor does the Aprillia.

Go figure, all bikes get a regular razzing as well, but oil and filters are changed every 3,000Klms religiously.

I run a non synthetic Diesel Oil in my bikes and have done so for many years.

Ah the great oil debate!!!

P.S I have converted a lot of friends over to diesel oil and they are all amazed as I am.

Cost savings are enormous, before I swapped it was Motul all the way at roughly twice the price.

Now I will enjoy a bevy or 3 with the money I have saved !

What is the exact oil you use and its viscosity rating??

It can't be helped with Teal :P

They all vary depending on how they are ridden/abused and/or worn. 250 ml in 1000miles I would say is about right for these big v-twins and nothing to be concerned about. They do tend to burn a little oil. Keep an eye on it to see if it gets progressively worse and if so, then possibly investigate further.

I think one of the biggest problems with these bikes is not having a dipstick and only the stupid eye glass for checking the level. This encourages either or both, not checking the level properly (ie level ground) or not checking at all because of lack of access or not being able to see clearly with a fairing lower on.

The oil warning light is useless because by the time that comes on it's already too late and damage is being done. It would be nice to have a light that comes on when say the oil gets to the minimum level in the eye glass.

Currently using Seneca 15W- 40 High Performance Diesel Oil with no anti friction additives!

Have Used other brands but in different bikes.

A couple of Trx850s, and FZR1000, an Aprillia Shiver, an R1 Yammie and a couple of other things I can't think of at the moment.

Works for me, there are some interesting videos around about Diesel Oil and bikes.

I remember the first time I used Diesel oil in a bike, it was with much trepidation, but when it worked I was a happy camper and now it's all I use in bikes.

Countless kilometres and touch wood! No dramas to speak of.

Another good brand is Nulon .

I send in 68 oil samples a month for our work engines to an Oil analysis company for checking. I will ask then the difference between Good Diesel oil and Semi-syn bike oil and see what they come up with. It may well be interesting.

Oil is oil pretty much, comes from the same place at the end of the day, then obviously refined into different viscosities. I think the the problems start when they start to add different additives for various uses in different types of vehicles.

Interesting the use of diesel oil. I would love to find a car oil that works well in our bikes if only to be able to buy 5l instead of 4l and not get so ripped off.
