Biking roots!

Post by Kev L »

Some on here know that my old mum passed away back at the end of April, and whilst sorting out her estate and clearing her house I came across boxes of old family photos and negatives (remember them!!!). I looked through the negs and found this!
Anyway the attached show how I got started!
ImageImage

The bike is a Francis Barnett Plover circa 1956/7. It was a green bike and my poor old dad was travelling home from work, in Edgware, one winters night when he stopped at a red light. A scaffold lorry only saw the red lamp at the last moment, braked and dumped its load of scaffold over dad and the bike. He was in Edgware general for a while after that and it’s one of my earliest memories, visiting him. He refused to have any kind of green vehicle after that.
I’m
Going to look out for a Plover for myself having identified the make and model now.

Is that a post 1960 AMC FB? Dads had what looked like a mono shock rear end, but the shocks are mounted behind the large rear mudguard, and the open flywheel.

Unfortunately they were all green. If you wanted red, and I think blue, the James captain was basically the same bike.

yes Kev, It's a 1963 AMC 197cc (not completely original as some panels and seat had completely rotted away) it came as a bucket full of bits a few years ago, it belonged to a good friend of mine who used it also to go to work on , I used it up to a few weeks ago to go motorcycle local meet ..but as most of good old British bikes it broke down, it has fried the battery, but because the wiring is home made its not a big surprise ....i'll get around to it, in the meantime it makes a good electric heater for the garage. i had bags of fun restoring it and had lots of help from the F/B forum some good blokes on that website to.
if you get one keep it Arden green ,it blends in very nicely with the hedgerow when the brakes don't work. good luck with the search for one. chrisc
