I think it's just a factory note. Whoever has checked the engine has marked it to say it's passed some checks along the production line or something.

All my Honda's have a mark like that, on my VFR and VTR they are on the back of the engine case above the swingarm pivot. My guess is that it is a quality control mark.

Nope, they're factory quality marks right enough.
There's more inside.

I also have numbers just like yours on my bike, look like they are from a breakers yard I first thought but they are from the factory, so a dealer told me.

Not for commuting or riding in the Winter , I just know how to clean them up and have a small amount of OCD that contributes.I spent quite some time on the exhausts /engine & metalwork over Winter with scotchbrite pads and my trusty dremel, the slightly rusty exhaust collar in the pic annoys the hell out of me!

To be fair, the bike had only 6,000 miles when i first bought it Nov 2016 but it had been neglected, most of it came up OK thou..and Mac, those numbers sure aint on with Tipex or my potions would have removed them!

I tried cleaning it off mine too with no luck. I wonder what they use because it's permanent unless somone take's a grinding wheel to it.

I suspect that the marks are under the engine lacquer.
