Carb pipework routing
Hi ive just got my hands on a 1998 vtr1000 firestorm cali spec bike in bits just got it together but i cant firgre out where the vac pipes and breathers go as all pipes were off would greatly apreciate if someone has a drawing or some know how as im struggling had her running but as soon as you open the throttle it dies bike has pairs removed and blanked and all the drawings i look at theres a valve in between the carbs i dont have one ? Download the Honda service manual from the Workshop Knowledgebase section of the forum which has illustrations of cable / hose etc. routing.
Basically two tank hoses (breather and drain) run from bottom of tank along the left frame and exit at the front to the bike near the belly pan. the important one the vacuum pupe runs from the rear cylinder take off to the rear of the petcock NOT the bottom. 10mm ID fuel hoses fit where they fit.

Cali bikes usually have the PAIR system (fresh air is sucked from the airbox into the exhaust manifold via a reed valve on the cam cover and a solenoid to turn the system on and off). They also have a charcoal canister to catch fugitive emissions from the fuel tank and the float bowls, and a solenoid valve which opens to allow these vapours to be sucked back into the airbox at an appropriate time.
If you are removing all these things, then you should end up with a piping layout exactly the same as a standard VTR; the float bowl vents are open to atmosphere and tucked in between the carbs in the bracket, the tank vent is open to atmosphere, and any extra ports on the airbox where the PAIR system connected would be blanked off.
You do need a vacuum connection from one inlet port to the vacuum tap under the fuel tank; it needs vacuum to stay open to let fuel flow to the carbs. The other inlet port should be capped off unless you are doing a carb synch.
