Question for the unfortunate.
Question for the unfortunate.
I have a question for some people on here who may have had an unfortunate experience to answer my question.
I've always worn full leathers and boots on anything i've owned from a 125cc to 1000cc, i say always, i've only been riding 3 years. I know this is categorically the best option of protection.
That said, i'm looking for a more 'casual' option for next summer for the more relaxed rides out without the sweaty ordeal of walking about in leathers. Textile jacket, Kevlar lined jeans and hightop trainer type boots. Specifically, Alpinestars T-Jaws jacket, Dainese D1 Jeans and Dainese Street Biker boots.
The jeans and boots being my main concern, has anyone had the misfortune of binning it in similar gear? How did it hold up and more importantly, how did you hold up?

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
Honestly I wouldn't bother with textiles. I was unlucky enough to come off in spain this year while wearing leathers and I've been told by friends who were there that they didn't hold up to well. Luckily just enough to stop major cuts but it didn't take much cutting to get me out of them.
I have always been of the mind of always wearing leather no matter what the heat is. That is now reinforced. It must have been mid 20's when I came off. No T-shirt underneath but I carried one with me.
Yeah ok it might be uncomfortable while walking round but I'd rather sweat than risk worse injuries. Doesn't matter how gooder rider you are, it can happen to any of us.

Likewise
A few years back on a 90º heatwave day I got a late call at midday to play a game of cricket just 8 miles away. Very tempted just to go in shorts or jeans, but decided that as I would be as some point going over 30mph to wear my leather trousers and jacket, and Sidi armoured boots. Thankfully I did as when bimbling through a village A car t-boned me at a cross roads. Me and the bike was shunted across the road amazingly without knocking me off. I parked a few yards up the road and walked back to see how the car driver was.
After ensuring they were okay, and locals had made them tea as they were in shock I went back to bike to find it was quite wrecked with the fairing/ radiator, footpeg & hanger and clutch cover trashed. The boots saved my lower leg and there was only the barest of marks on my shin underneath my leathers . Easiest phyiscal injuries compensation I've ever had and despite the bike being cosmentically written off only took a couple of hundred to get back on the road with plenty spare! And still got to the cricket match on time and played.
Moral is - while it my be a tad uncomfy while togged up on a hot day for a few hours - it doesn't compare to the discomfort for few weeks/months hog tied up in an orthapedic ward during summer.
If it's hot like one year when I went to MotoGP up in the midlands I took my cricket bag with wheels along and stripped off my leathers, boots and lid and changed into shorts.

It may be that your whole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
I wear reinforced denim jeans , high Dr.Martens boots and a reinforced leather jacket during the warmer months, but proper boots and leathers in winter. The jeans and Dr Martens offer a degree of protection but not as good as the right kit.I recently got T boned at a junction while in the reinforced jeans and Dr Martens.O.K. I suffered torn tendons which took 6/7 weeks to mend but would the injuries been less harmfull in leathers ? who knows.Whats wrong with taking a back pack with lighter clothes when you go to shows etc.and changing into them.It boils down to the age old question if you think you've got a £50 head then get a £50 helmet.
SO WHEN DOES THIS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW BETTER KICK IN
Re: Question for the unfortunate.
Not exactly the question you're asking, but, when other (usually younger ) bikers ask me about textiles versus leathers, I say how many racers do you see wearing textiles

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
not crashed in them, but I do see a need for non leather riding stuff.
If I am not out for a proper ride, or I will be walking/ site seeing / taking a pillion, or just going to collect stuff... then I will wear Draggin Kevlar jeans and A-Star short boots. still wear the leather jacket, I also have knee armour that I wear under the jeans.
I also just bought a Held Gortex textile jacket with full armour which I use zipped to leather jeans for colder / wetter / longer trips.
Interestingly I ride slower when I am not in full leathers, and I try not to wear more protection than my pillion

Also get a long S/S cable with eyes, thread your jacket and trousers and helmet through them and padlock to the bike. Always worked for me. just the boots may be the problem. Take a backpack and chuck ya boots in there Sorted.

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
The main difference with textiles vs leather is that if you come off with textile your more likely to get a burn from heat build up and the clothing will be good for the bin.
I wear kevlar Jeans and a bomber jacket, your be surprised how much abuse a bomber jacket can take I and some of my friends have had off's, but to be honest with you I would recommend a specialist textile jacket, the padding is of course optional.
Leather are and always will be the best end of story, but yeah they are horrid during the summer, if your going to do any kind of high speeds then leather will save your ass a lot more than textile will, the thing I found with textile stuff as well for good quality your need to abuse your wallet.

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
Good textiles will cost you more than leathers .
I've recently just got new Oxford 2.0 stuff for my commute to work and tho it's got full armour I still wouldn't like to have a slide in it .
I would of got leathers but they wouldn't of been warm enough or fitted in my locker at work .
When I'm out bashing the lanes I have my leather gimp suit on regardless of how hot it is outside .
When I had my old textile trousers on I got a little carried away and dropped a knee on a nice bend , even tho I only touched down for a blink of an eye it put a large hole through the outer layer and took a chunk out of the knee armour ,this I was shocked by tbh , I've done the same with leather bottoms on without knee sliders and it didn't even break the finish on them .

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
I have a leather wallet, but it takes more of abuse buying decent textiles than buying decent two-piece leathers.
Leathers for fast games, textiles opr the commute, but then my commute is 25 miles each way on the Sarf Circular and I rarely exceed 100 on the little 600 commuter.

It's not falling off, it's an upgrade opportunity.
Re: Question for the unfortunate.
I wear base layers, winter and summer, textile jacket for the winter and wet weather as It has 3 different layers I can remove,
leathers in the summer, but always wear leather trousers and boots regardless, for comfort

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
I had a pretty quick 'off' a couple of years ago, I come off my 1200 Bandit at 70'ish' I was wearing reinforced jeans, leather jacket, good helmet, gloves etc.
I won't wear reinforced jeans any more, whilst sliding along on the road the left leg rode up and left my calf exposed above my boots to the road, resulting 12" X 6" 'graze' on my calf and leg, the rear pocket pulled off ripping the jeans and exposed my left hip/butt cheek, again suffered nasty grazes, ALL the leather protection looked very second hand but did it's job. It was just a long slide, I didn't hit anything, as it was a straight road........ but thats another story

Re: Question for the unfortunate.
I've worn textiles for the first time this summer.
I actually found them hotter than wearing leathers??? Ultimately, decent leather will always give you better protection but textiles are a lot easier to live with everyday and I'm enjoying being toasty and warm on my commute this time of year, not to mention dry.
If you pic your leather accordingly, my old one has panels which come out to let more air in and also a removable winter liner. Other than it not being as waterproof as I would have liked it's been an excellent jacket.
