new shock on the block.

Post by lumpyv »

ive been thinking about sorting out my suspension .

I have been in communication with a nice chap from realm engineering : -

"Following telecom, please find attached a picture showing the VTR1000 replacement shock unit that we produce, it has the benefit of 13 position dampening adjustment as well as an adjustable spring platform, these adjustments enable you to adjust the unit to your style of riding and allow you to alter them if you carry a pillion passenger, the unit carries a 2 year warranty and is fully rebuild able.

To enable us to supply the unit with the correct internal valving and spring rate can you confirm the following information for the majority of use;

Is riding normally solo or with pillion passenger and weights in both cases?

Is luggage carried and approx weight?

Is riding style touring or sporty?

Current price for the unit is £225.00 plus vat (£270.00) to include the spring supplied based on the information above, we will deliver FOC and availability is 5/7 days from confirmation of the order.

I have got a photo on the e mail he sent me , but I cant get it to jump onto here :|

it is a nice looking bit of kit with a metallic body and a black spring.

I would be interested to hear any opinions / knowledge people may have. (about the shock )

I think he has been doing replacement shocks for the older beemers and vintage jags? the bmw folk speak highly of his work

They make stuff for loads of applications, classic cars, bikes etc.
I think they sell a shock for the K series BMW bikes (bricks) and I know they supply one for the Yamaha TR1 which is my other bike.
From what I've heard they perform very well, look very well engineered and not too expensive either..
I might end up getting one as I am where you are with suspension now although my local mechanic has just become a HyperPro dealer and they are offering some good deals on front and rear kits just now.

Out of interest, what's the symtoms of a crappy shock? On a smooth level road mine corners on rails but add a few humps and hollows and it's weave city...

I think the best way to explain a better shock is it gives you a greater safety margin before it gets out of shape. My old Honda shock used to kick me off the seat when ever I hit a severe bump but after fitting a decent after market one my backside is still planted after hitting the same size bump.
Also the ride is a lot smoother and when I'm really going for it I can push it that much harder and still keep control.
It will still bite you if you over do it, it's just the over do it level has moved a bit further up the scale :D
