Seat mods

Post by Phil Treadgold »

Hi guys. Has anyone modified their seat? I'm after increasing the height of my seat by 20-25mm and recovering it myself. Do you think a sheet of vinyl for seats would confirm to the shape ok? Also ideas on best type of foam and adhesive please. All input welcome. Ta.

Yes I did one of mine. I used Alcantara type fabric off E.bay...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/alcantara-fabric

Says its waterproof but it isn't...showerproof maybe...The stuff I bought said it was for use in boats...

Combined that with a bit of memory foam I had laying around...

Unpicked the origonal staples & re-stapled it with a heavy duty stapler...

Result not perfect TBH but far more comfy that standard....

I also had another one redone by a professional M/C seat upholsterer https://viking-motorcycle-seats.co.uk/ but wasnt 100% happy with that, better elbow comfort but found it digs in the thighs...

People speak highly of a co called Else Made https://www.elsemade.co.uk/ but both the above mean sending a seat away...Plenty of 2nd hand ones about though...In fact if you want a spare to play around with I have about 4....

Haha I know what you mean by tonsils comfort. What glue did you use to join old and new foam?

None Phil, I'm not sure what glue you can use, I do know stuff like Evo stick will eat the old foam & quite possibly the memory foam but no doubt there is a glue out there that will do the trick...

Found this but check before you buy as a lot of it is for styrafoam type 'foam'...

I guess the one you want to look for is for upholstery foam...

I've always given seats to be altered / recovered to a specialist. Luckily I've an old school friend who does car seats/ bike seats saving me buying more specialist tools, i.e. heavy duty sewing machine etc. and learning the knack by trial & error.

Also recommend https://www.elsemade.co.uk/ as well.

If you still go DIY then try something like this https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-Cans-Spray ... 3818103505

or 3M spray
