Acquired a 1999 Firestorm

Post by Dazza2910 »

Evening. Acquired a 1999 Firestorm in need of some TLC. Got it for nothing from a colleague.

Fitted a new battery and it fired straight up. Cleaned the cobwebs and mould/dirt off it today and started making a list of things to do and bits required.

First step I think is to give the engine a service. New coolant and bleed, and a radiator cap as it's missing. Then I'll move onto suspension, brakes, tyres and then cosmetic stuff last.

Owned a few bikes over the years so won't bore you with them all. Last few were GSX-R1000, Tiger 1050 Sport, Speed Triple R, Tiger 1050 Sport again and currently KTM 1290 Adventure.

Live in the south side of Edinburgh. Hoping folk here will be able to help with some info when required!!

Cheers

It's been sitting in a damp workshop for a few years. All cleaned off though. According to the service book it's done less than 1500 miles since it's okay service. I'll do it all again anyway, but at least it hadn't done to many miles before being laid up.

List so far :

Engine service
Coolant flush/bleed
Possible carb balance/clean
Rear shock doesn't look great
Front fork overhaul
Tyres
Brake pads
Braided hoses
Oil cooler pipe doesn't look great
Full set of fairing bolts
Get wheels blasted and painted

That'll do for now!!

Add / budget for manual CCTs and think about inspecting shock / swingarm linkage as that gets overlooked till bearings rust & seize.

Have you got the plastic bodywork & mudguard?

I've already thought about the CCT's so will probably add that to the list.

Already got the service manual.

Got all the bodywork and lights, except one indicator, but probably going to be track bike anyway.

Will need to get some paddocks stands too. Already have two, but the front one is an under yoke one and I don't have the right pin size. The rear one I have has hooks and the Firestorm swingarm doesn't have anywhere to screw in bobbins!

So another purchase......

Although I'm going to need something else when I take the swingarm out!!

Fun and games!
