External hard drive recommendations?

Post by Jamoi »

I'm bit of a numpty when it comes to computers (ok and most other things), but I have just ordered a little box which allows me to play films on my telly via a usb memory stick or card... here: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1282948677

So I have a memory stick but it is only 2 gigabytes and holds about 6 films, I have been looking at these '1 Terabyte' external hard drives by Toshiba for £50, do you think that's a good deal?

Or do you think there are better alternatives?

Here's the Toshiba item: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.vi ... 1155039792

Your opinions are appreciated

1TB for £50 isn't bad going and Toshiba may not be the best out there but it's still a branded name..

Hard Drives are also tough things by their nature anyway, as long as you don't spend time working around superconductors or whatnot that will do you good

This is what I'm planning on buying,
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161259477014? ... 1423.l2649

More then enough space, (I've filled my 1 TB laptop hard drive) good make and not much more expensive than the one you're already looking at

I recommend Lacie http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/range.htm?id=10036

I use a Lacie d2 Quadra for my desktop backups but that has a few more connection types than you'd need.

I have WD 'my book' 1TB had it a few years now and it;s been faultless, however if you are planning to store films I'd suggest you go for 3TB, 1TB sounds like a lot of storage but I'm finding that HD blu ray rip files are getting bigger and bigger eg Ironman 3 1080p DTS master audio blu ray rip was a 13gb file , Rush 'live' concert BD rip 16gb, my 1TB is nearly full I'm going to have to start deleting or buy another hard disc
I've now gone all European and bought a KTM Superduke GT and Aprilia RSV1000R :D ,
Storm is now gone  .

The harder the better, if you can handle it.

I agree, go for the 3TB hard drive seeing as you want it for films. I'm surprised how the prices have come down for 3TB. I bought a Seagate external had drive 1TB for doing back-up a few years ago, and more recently an Hitachi 1TB internal hard drive. Both of those have so far have worked as they should.

Your right 1tb is nothing when it comes to video storage especially if uncompressed.

60mins of HDV 1080i Video with Audio at 2ch 48kHz / 16bit = around 11gb
60mins of DVCPROHD 1080i Video with Audio at 2ch 48kHz / 16bit = around 48gb
60mins of Uncompressed 10 bit 1920 x 1080 at 25fps Video with Audio at 2ch 48kHz / 16bit = around 464gb

So as you can see things get rather large quite quickly. Luckily most things are compressed. You will never get true HD with HDV as by it's nature it's highly compressed. But quality is a subjective thing anyway and there is a lot more to it than the codec.

No ones mentioned the cuddly toy yet. 8O

Thanks alot guys, I knew it would be worth asking. I'll save up for the 3tb hard drive, the plan is to spend a little money to save a little money... watching films at home will be much cheaper than going to the pub and loosing £100 a pop! :)

I did wonder if someone was a chocolate fan
I am like Willy Wonka.... a proper chocoholic and just as mad. That teddy came with last years Easter egg.

Give me a box of Jaffa's and I will scoff the lot one after another. Give me a Terries chocolate Orange and I will do the same. Give me any Milk chocolate bar, Cadburys type thing and I will scoff the lot in one session, though I did struggle with my 1 metre long Toblerone I was given once  Give me a very good quality high Cocoa content dark Chocolate bar and I will savour it. The higher Cocoa content gives me the hit I require from smaller amounts. Ganache filled truffles Mmmmm my favourite. :Hungry:

Oh yeh and I'm quite capable of waking up in the middle of the night craving Chocolate and can scoff a whole jar of Nuttella.
