Re: what have you done to your "bike" today

Fitted a 6mm shim to the rear shock; was surprisingly easy to put the bike on the sidestand, then gently jack up at the right side muffler clamp until there was enough clearance between frame and shock link to slide the shim into place. Also fitted an APE manual CCT, just to the rear head as I am st...

Re: APE manual CCT installation

Back tensioner replaced, was pretty painless. One question, when I was rotating the crank by hand out to check everything was hunky dory, there's a ratchety sort of sound coming from the front left of the motor. Is that normal, I was thinking maybe I was hearing the sprag clutch. Haven't done the fr...

Re: APE manual CCT installation

Thanks fellas.

I've read and re-read Cybercarl's great step-by-step and it looks do-able, and being able to download the workshop manual is a blessing so I'm pretty comfortable about this.

Re: APE manual CCT installation

Be gentle on the noob, Darkember! But you make a good point. I was amazed when I pulled the valve cover off the back head just how much space there was in there; all those warnings about not dropping bolts or small children into the motor innards suddenly made sense. I could see the cam sprocket on ...

APE manual CCT installation

I have just received my APE manual CCT's and will install this weekend. In reading up on the APE website, I came across the following precaution: "IMPORTANT: WHEN REPLACING ANY HYDRAULIC OEM TENSIONER WITH A MANUAL TENSIONER, IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE OIL PASSAGE THAT SUPPLIED THE O...

Pulled the vacuum petcock today. Both diaphragms were in good nick, and I think I had a bit of crud stuck in the manual tap that was stopping that sealing fully when "off". Interestingly I found the vacuum valve would stay stuck open when the line was vented, and this was allowing fuel to ...

Re: New in New Zealand

From the V  are you sure you haven't got a leaky carb float bowl. The petcock tap is only there in case of a petcock or diaphragm failure. You should be able to remove the fuel hoses and have no leaks with the tap in the On position. (:-}) Thanks Carl, I think I have both a leaking petcock a...

Re: New in New Zealand

The latest issue is s fuel leak while parked. I have had the tank off, and even with the manual tap off there was a bit of leakage. Now it's refitted and fuel has been coming out from the v of the engine and dripping to the floor, not very quickly but enough to stink out the garage. I've turned the ...

Thanks Al I'm working my way over the bike trying to undo years of neglect and corrosion. This week I've stripped and cleaned the brakes and rebuilt the forks after a repaint. Also repainted the mirror stems, top clamp and bars. Check out the mayonnaise that lived inside the forks! Ewwww! http://tap...

Re: New in New Zealand

Thanks Carl. That picture is just what I see down the inlets on my bike. I would have taken a picture but both hands were fully occupied lifting the carb slide and holding the throttle open! I must confess getting beyond 180 has little appeal but I will have to check it out (on a closed road and onl...

Re: New in New Zealand

Thank you all for your kind wishes. The internet is a dangerous place for separating fact from fiction, but I had read that the 180 km/hr Jap restriction is driven from the speedo and that disconnecting a single wire (pink/green?) would allow me to go even faster (not something I would want very oft...

Hello All I've just bought a 1997 VTR with 70000km on it. This is a Japanese market model imported here in 2011, and I bought it complement my other Honda, a 1999 VFR800. So far I've only ridden the bike 200 km home from where I bought it (so I know where the fuel cap is...) and have started to laun...
