Re: Strange coolant leakage
^ this, or mine also did exactly the same for a while and it was one of the radiator hoses. I tightened it but it still leaked on a cold start-up, then I realised that I'd tightened it too much and ovalled the stub on the (quite soft) radiator :/ New hoses were the remedy (and a new RH rad)...

Re: Wicky...
I remember him introducing himself at the 20th anniversary meet in Birmingham, and his manner made me feel like he'd known me for years. I immediately felt he was a person full of kindness and with such a twinkle in his eye, and he was constantly helpful and very funny on here and on the fb group. I...
Re: E10 fuel
https://www.motorcycleproject.com/text/ethanol.html This guy claims that the problem is not ethanol but rather the much lower quantities of aromatics (benzene, toluene, xylene) in today's petrol. I believe both ethanol and the aromatics act as octane boosters so with more ethanol, added for environm...

Re: Cold starting issue
Damn didn't notice in the photo that that hose is braided! Don't like how that adds bulk and reduces flexibility.
Anyone know of a source of good 3.5 mm plain rubber vacuum hose? I struggled which is why I opted for silicone eventually.

Re: Cold starting issue
Thanks for the warning...I've ordered a length of this which hopefully will fit the bill https://www.veewee.co.uk/186vg0010 Antifreeze – glycols aren't alcohols per se, they are diols, but maybe antifreeze does contain alcohols too, I'm not sure...either way 'rubber' (whatever type the OEM hoses act...

Re: Cold starting issue
Just an FYI in case of future issues....gasoline and silicone do not play well together. The gas will cause the silicone hoses to break down  Thank you for the heads-up! Do you suppose this will be OK for the air-cut and fuel tap vacuum hoses though? I don't expect the air-cut ones will to...

Re: Cold starting issue
I'm pleased to say this was just down to the fact that Halford's had sold me a dodgy battery. I should've taken it straight back when found that it was discharged when got it home after buying it back in January (and also because it was labelled Activation Date July 2019!). Took it back today, they ...

Re: Cold starting issue
Yeah low compression has crossed my mind (the bike has 106,000 miles on it after all), and I too have a gauge but without the right size adapter for the VTR. HOWEVER, it didn't do this at all before swapping to different carbs, 1000 miles ago at the beginning of November. Also power is definitely no...

Cold starting issue
Since I swapped my carbs for another set, my bike is difficult to start from cold. It otherwise runs great with these carbs, better than the previous ones (think they have less worn needle jets, though the reason for swapping was a seized pilot mixture screw). Once warm it starts literally on the bu...

Re: rev counter not working or intermittent
When I had this it was in fact not the battery terminals being loose but the connection at the main fuse was loose.

Re: Wiring loom ground points
Resurrecting this old thread of mine because I've been trying to solve an issue with my coolant gauge intermittently not working and have finally, after much irritating head-scratching and fiddling/testing, done so. I did the testing in the manual and thought I'd narrowed it down to the gauge itself...

Re: needle shim
Also, petrol can get sucked directly into the inlet manifold through the vacuum hose if the fuel tap diaphragm is holed. However it's the rear cylinder that'd be rich from this since it's the rear manifold that the vacuum hose connects to. Btw, stock setup is one shim washer under each needle. But t...

Re: Temp gauge fault
I spoke too soon...occasionally the gauge is moving to minimum for a while then sorts itself out after a while.
I had tested the signal cable from the sensor for continuity and it's fine, so presumably this is due to a short or intermittent break somewhere in the power supply or ground cable?

Re: Occasional full-throttle hesitation
Well, what the HELL. I've now been through the tank of Shell V-Power and then two tanks of normal Shell, and try as I might I can't re-create the hesitation issue. Can this really be because of running Sainsbury's fuel? I knew there may be some differences in the composition and/or quality of the ad...
