plus the tv show are only going to show you the bits they want to. The course is probably two weeks long and they've shown you 10 min, if that. They're only going to show the bits they want to and probably not in the order they happened!!

Good news on getting the bracket but I can't understand why the seat wont latch down.

Try loosening the bolts and see if you can latch the seat down then. If so, apply lots of downward force to the bracket whilst bolting it into place.
