Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Finally managed to get out for a good run yesterday. Warmed her up nicely and hopped on to get some fuel, a few minutes down the road she strted billowing smoke again. I pulled over and this poor woman copped a lung full, "Sorry", I gesture but she isn't fazed, after all half the country b...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Thanks guys. I think I panicked a bit thinking it was the valve stem seals, now I remember reading a while ago your engine will smoke on startup if they are worn. Hop to give it a run soon and see how it goes. What do you mean by sticky rings tony?

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
I know I'm a fair way down the thread but I'll see how i go... she starts and runs really well know after all that but when she got to full operating temperature after idling and the occasional rev for 10-15 minutes, started to smoke a bit when I blip the throttle and give it a good rev up. It's a g...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Thanks for the advice and support everyone. So after all this, the bike is ready but the best time to ride has passed and with self isolation I can't really ride anyway. Unless I have a backpack on and am going shopping in search of long lost bog roll. Are twits hoarding poo squares over in the UK a...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Yes I was thinking that the four litres that made its way into the sump may have done something to the plates... I have had the day off as I am feeling a bit you know, like I should be self isolating. Felt the clutch lever and it feels ok, started her up and is idling as smooth as ever with no clutc...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Ok so after waiting a month for my genuine rebuild kit to fly from the US, it got stuck in the Bahamas and disappeared (can't blame the kit). I ended up ordering a whole new fuel tap and filter locally fitted it yesterday and NO LEAKS, yesss. New oil, new filter, new fuel and she kicked over straigh...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Now that the fires are over and my life is semi normal again...Haven't fired her up yet. I still have the sump plug out and a small amount of petrol is dripping through and ending up in my oil pan. Not much but noticeable. I managed to find a genuine petcock kit in the US but he doesn't have 1997, o...

I can't remember if it was genuine or not, I know my rocker cover gasket was.

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Yes that's what I thought after reading your post regarding setting the tank up and seeing if anything comes out...sigh. I was reading an old thread and a failed vacuum diaphragm is the cause for fuel gushing from the tap. Everything 'seems' ok in there, I need to get hold of a petcock schematic. As...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Did you check to see if any petrol was getting past the diaphragm tap before you stripped it down :?: By that I mean removing all the pipes on the tap and putting a container underneath to collect any petrol that could be getting through. With sufficient petrol in the tank I would have left it over...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Sweet Wicky. After all this time I just found that box of nice screwdrivers I bought five years ago are in fact JIS.
And I just thought the red ones are right handed and the green left

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
I pulled the tank and petcock off and the petcock diaphragm is all good and everything seems ok in there. Some observations to note... With the bike sitting with the sump plug out I noticed a small amount of fuel appear after the second day. When i was taking off the petcock the fuel filter became w...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Thanks Chris, I also remember hearing the sound of something under pressure when i kicked it over, turned out to be the fuel in my engine, ugh. And yes thank the bike gods it didn't ignite and blow up with all that unleaded swirling around in there. I've let it drain and will get oil tomorrow and se...

Re: No fuel, tons of smoke, won't start
Thanks for the encouragement gents. I have a spare filter, just need to go tomorrow and pick up some oil. I only just built the petcock, but i will pull it down and check it. Maybe the petrol has cleaned some of the gunk from the engine, given it a freshen up so to speak. I'll wait and see and let y...
