Yes eliminate the light/instrument cluster first before replacing the sender unit. Disconnect the connector plug as Watty said and short the two wires together to see if the light comes on. You have the main engine earth, neg (-) running from the battery and usually bolted onto the speed sensor by the rear CCT. am sure many would have asked this, but again, after how many km's of total run can a CCT failure be expected ? or is it something which can happen anytime ?
