Project Firestorm

Hi all I've detailed my progress with this one, mostly in the workshop section, but now I can post in the general, i.e. bike running forum! Once past the erratic fuelling episode, I finally had a working motorcycle, time to evaluate. Unusually, its rebirth co-incided with some of the hottest weather...

Re: Best bike

Be careful when considering 'blades. The uderseat pipe models had a tendancy to split their cylinders between 1 -2 pots (overbored to much). The fugly latest model burns oil If you are one of the unlucky people, it gets through a Litre every 1000 miles..... Eeeek! Its been a hot topic on the 'blade ...

Re: Putting this VTR back on the road.

One more report. I'm now into the fine tuning endgame, little hiccups at town speeds tuned out now I have access to the airscrew (remove expansion tank bottle). I read in a post that removing the airbox snorkel gives some performance enhancement.. No, it dosent!!! I merely re-introduces the 'lurch'!...

Re: Spitting carbs?

Balancing is GOOD. But, you will find that your idle mixture is a bit weak. See my post on airscrew made easy.

Re: Air mixture screw made easy.

Nope. Getting a screwdriver right on the airscrew, turning it in till it grounds and then adjusting it in small increments is the only, truly accurate way. I'm done in about five minutes including removing, replacing the overflow bottle. BTW, that damn thing is being relocated right out of the way, ...

Re: Air mixture screw made easy.

Cant find a reference to it, but I'm guessing its a springy screwdriver idea? They are OK in their way, but being able to approach the airscrew diectly and feel your adjustment will always do it for me,

Cheers

Air mixture screw made easy.

Had a good look through the archive, not found anyone mentioning this. Adjusting the mixture air screw is damn near impossible as the carb bottoms (the bit with the pilot screw) are tight up against the cylinders. There is a scein of cables and hoses in there, plus the expansion bottle. It is simple...

Re: Putting this VTR back on the road.

Finally had my day in the sun. Took her out for a run up to the North York moors. I ride with Miguel on his RS Sprint, a good, steady rder on a well sorted machine. If I can pull a gap on Mig then the bike I'm on is doing alright. It did take some time to get used to the instant punch, roundabouts w...

Re: airbox

I can see now why running withut the snorkel would give some fuelling improvments, that would put the intake area behing the headstock in relatively still, but cooler air. That was to be my next, interim move, good to have confirmation that it does make a difference. And yes, now I have a little lig...

Re: airbox

Hi After discovering that the 'storm WONT run, at all, without the front plastic baffle fitted (the bit that fits between fornt carb and the headstock area), I am going to 'look' at this. Air turbulance destroys any semblance of smooth running above 60MPH if this bit of plastic is missing (BELIEVE M...

airbox

Just having a quick mooch around E-Bay and came accross this. Item:- 220862665248 Its totally different to mine. Is this an SP1/2 box or an improved 'strom one?
(I'm a bit preoccupied with airboxes at the moment after the last week \i've had)

Re: Putting this VTR back on the road.

The Firestorm is FIXED!!!!!!! A Mea Culpa incident, I'm ashamed to admit, BUT, a lesson for anyone having similar problems. This one came to me as a chassis with fairings etc. loosley fitted, the front cyl had dropped two valves so it was head off and that lot replaced. A big cadboard box came with ...

Re: Putting this VTR back on the road.

Bit of an update 48 pilot jets arrived today, fitted this morning (I can do this blindfolded now). There has been a dramatic improvement in slow speed runnig, the enormous backfires into the airbox have stopped entirely, it is now a pleasure to potter around at town speeds. I still get the odd clutc...

Re: Putting this VTR back on the road.

Hi Ooops, I did post a reply but its either gone into the ether or I (more likely) didnt press submit... Old age.. Right, to clarify, yes, this has been standing for at least five years. Worse, though, the tank was half full of stuff that smelt like wood floor sealer, but was old petrol. The tank wa...
